In spring 2025 BestBookDirect undertook a survey of 1000 website visitors* to shed light on why booking direct is becoming increasingly popular for stays in the UK with year on year growth of around 7%.
For stays outside the UK OTA's remained the dominant method for booking and our research revealed that this was principally due to the fact that such trips commonly involved multiple different elements such as flights, hotels and car hire etc which were easy to book using a single website. The results of this survey are detailed below.

The number one reason given for customers preferring to book direct is brand loyalty (78% sample 1000). Guests who already know of a hotel brand prefer to book direct and this loyalty is often incentivised by the guests benefitting from complimentary extras. The most common extras offered are free room upgrades, followed by drinks vouchers and even free additional nights.
Quality of website information along with ease of use was cited as the second biggest reason for guests choosing to book direct (45% - sample 1000). Guests appreciated the far more comprehensive level of information on rooms, restaurants and facilities that the brand website contained when compared to the 'scraped' version an OTA (online travel agent) presented.
Lower down the scale but still significant at 12% (sample -1000) was the ability to specify a particular favoured room or restaurant choice. Clearly these came from guests who have previously stayed at the venue or have come recommended from a fellow guest.
6% of respondents cited the ability to easily make changes to their booking as the principal reason they chose to book directly with the hotel. For these guests they feel bookings made through an OTA added another layer of complexity to the booking which is unnecessary.
