Best Book Direct Hotel Review Policy
- We review many different hotel chains in the UK and always do so 100% anonymously.
- This means that we book and pay for the stay out of our own pocket, the hotels are never made aware of our booking either before during or after our stay. They are never informed that we are reviewing their facilities or service.
- The reviews we write and publish are 100% our own opinions and are in no way influenced by the hotel brands either during our stay or after, nor do they have any influence over what we write. We aim to give a full, transparent review of the hotel, and we will reveal the good, bad and the ugly!
- This is important so that we remain truly independent so you can be sure that you are reading a genuine real review which has zero bias.
Expert review of the Liverpool Malmaison Hotel
Malmaison is a relatively young boutique hotel chain, it was founded in 1994 and operates 16 hotels in the UK, 15 of which are in historic buildings with just the Liverpool hotel being a purpose built.
This hotel is located on the famous Liverpool waterfront at the former Princess Dock, just north of the Three Graces (The Royal Liver Building, The Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building). It is a perfect location for visiting the World famous Albert Dock which is home to Tate Liverpool and the Beatles Story museum. The vast Liverpool One shopping centre is a level 10 minute walk away and there are plenty of stylish bars and restaurants within an easy stroll.
The hotel itself has a very adult boutique feel about it, there are plenty of rich dark colours, discreet low lighting in public areas and extravagant fixtures and fittings.
You will find 130 rooms spread across six of the eleven floors (other floors are used for apartments and conference facilities) each with a different city inspired theme - Liverpool has a lot to offer from football, music and its rich maritime heritage.
Room choice on offer includes: Standard and Standard Twin, Club and Club Twin, Club Deluxe and finally Signature Suite.

We booked into a Club room for a one night stay in December 2023
The first thing you notice on arrival is how smart and adult this hotel looks and feels. The lobby has impressive 3 storey height ceilings with feature lighting and a fire pit central feature. Leading off from this area is the bar and restaurant and the reception area.
On arrival at reception we were greeted by the efficient and friendly reception staff, we actually arrived an hour before he official check in time for Malmaison hotels which is 3pm for check in (11am check out), however this was no problem and we were allowed to take our club room. |
The lifts up to the rooms are all themed with murals on the walls, our room was located on the 7th floor and we had been offered either Liver building or River views, we opted for the river view.
The club room was spacious and the decoration feels decadent with lots of dark rich colours. Our window looked out over Princes Dock and with a partial view of the river (there was an office block on the other side of the dock which obscured a full view). The club room certainly felt spacious with a king size bed and large ensuite with walk in shower and two person bath.

Overall impression of the room:
It was very comfortable, a good supportive mattress on the bed and decent quality bed linen with additional pillows in the wardrobe if required ensured we enjoyed a good night's sleep. It was clean and the decorative order was good, there was some peeling wallpaper to the side of the wardrobe and the fridge had leaked some water in the wardrobe which looked long standing as the support shelf had some water damage, however other than that the room was without issue.
The room had excellent soundproofing with no noise from adjoining rooms and the window (non-opening) was fitted with an excellent blackout blind ensuring a dark room with the lights out.
Having two chairs (desk and lounge) meant we could enjoy a drink using the table or watch the TV without having to lay on the bed.
The ensuite was also excellent, spotlessly clean and there was excellent water pressure for both filling the bath and having a decent shower. The complimentary toiletries are of nice quality.
WiFi
Malmaison offers free wifi throughout the hotel and this works well. It is perfectly adequate for general browsing, emails and social media. The connection and speed was stable throughout our stay.
Restaurant - Food and Drink
We had booked a flexible package which included a 2 course dinner, bed and breakfast so we got to sample the service and food in the restaurant.
The restaurant is open to hotel guests and the public and there is a large bar area. Again the area is low lit and very pleasant with quality fittings and comfortable seating. It feels like a cocktail lounge. The serving staff were all pleasant but on the evening we dined service was fairly slow and they have a large TV screen in the adjacent bar area which was showing a major football match (although the sound was turned down) and this was an annoying distraction unless you had come to watch the football!
The menu is fairly wide and varied and had plenty of choice for vegetarians/vegan guests. The food was good but on the fairly expensive side if you were not on a deal. Overall I think I would venture out to one of the many excellent restaurants within an easy stroll of the hotel if I stay again.
Breakfast the following morning was however absolutely fantastic. Huge array of top quality food including extensive continental self-service buffet and a varied cooked breakfast menu. Staff were very attentive and the full english breakfast I sampled was excellent using top quality ingredients cooked to perfection. There are unlimited fresh fruit juices and a variety of premium teas and bean to cup coffees. I was a little sceptical that the price of £18 for the continental or £21 for the complete hot choices plus continental was good value but having eaten it I think it is.
Conclusion
This is a really nice alternative to your standard city hotel, it feels very grown up and boutique. In addition this hotel is in a great location to explore all the best bits of Liverpool and parking right next to the hotel is secure and easy.
We paid £173 all in for two people in a Club room including dinner and breakfast and overall had a fantastic stay. Although paying for the breakfast and dinner without a package would be pricey, Malmaison offers the package deals with incredible discounts
